Service · Fence & gate repair

Fences and gates that don’t rattle in the easterly.

Panel replacement, post concreting, gate rehanging, hinge and latch swap. Straightforward boundary work - done properly, with fixings that survive Dover’s salt exposure, and posts set with a concrete spec that holds in chalk-clay.

What’s included

Honest pricing

£95 call-out, first hour included, £45 per hour after that - a single panel swap or a full boundary rerun, you pay for the time beyond the first hour.

The Dover angle

Two Dover things worth calling out on boundary work. First, the ground: much of the town and the cliff-top villages sit on chalk with a shallow clay cap. Chalk holds water, and a post set on the surface with pushed-in postcrete comes loose within two winters. We dig to 700mm minimum and set full-depth. Second, hinges: galvanised gate hinges on the seafront and cliff-top belt rust through the pin within four to five years. A4 stainless is a couple of pounds more per hinge and lasts three times as long - we spec it as standard on any coastal job.

The other quiet issue is that Dover’s persistent easterlies (mid-October to March) rattle any gate that isn’t hung tight. Loose hinges accelerate their own failure; a gate that rattles for one winter needs the pin drilled out and reset by the next.

Where we stop - and who we hand you to

What we don’t do: full boundary reruns of 20+ metres (a fencer’s job with a mini-mixer worth the setup), planning-required boundary treatments over 2m, or party-wall boundary disputes. Small panels, single gates, hinge swaps, individual post replacements: yes.
