The unglamorous jobs. A door that stopped closing properly. A catch that turns without engaging. A cupboard hinge that’s pulled out of the frame. The stuff that a full trade day-rate can’t justify but sits on a to-do list for two years.
£95 call-out, first hour included, £45 per hour after that - whether it’s one sticking door or a full to-do list.
Dover’s post-war centre and the Victorian belt above the harbour have two dominant repair patterns. First, salt-humidity swelling - internal doors on the front elevation of a terrace above the seafront swell in autumn and jam. That’s a plane-and-adjust job, not a rehang. Second, the deep-frame settlement in the older stock along Victoria Park and Maison Dieu Road, where a hundred years of soft-brick movement means the frame is out of square and every catch is a fraction off - that’s a strike-plate re-mortice.
Neither is a difficult job for someone who knows what they’re looking at. Both are done wrong every day by full-day trades who’d rather rehang the whole door.
If the diagnosis on the day turns out to be a rewire behind a failing socket, a full structural crack across a load-bearing wall, damp under a rendered wall, or anything else that isn’t a handyman job - we tell you, we don’t charge, and we point you to who to call.
